Orito Cantora and Jenn Del Tambó are Colombian musicians who co-founded the first network of female percussionists in the Caribbean. Their music blends various traditional rhythms like Cumbia, Bullerengue, and Chalupa.
Orito is a composer, singer, and skilled maracas player involved in multiple musical projects, including the Red Tamboreras de Colombia, co-founded with percussionist Jenn Del Tambó in 2016.
The project was inspired by Jenn's journey. In 2011, she became the first woman to win the award for best Tambor Alegre performer at the International Bagpipe Festival in Sucre, Colombia. Traditionally, the Tambor Alegre, also known as tambor hembra, was off-limits to women, who typically sang or danced rather than played percussion. Despite societal barriers, Jenn pursued her passion, receiving clandestine drum lessons since the age of ten. These experiences fueled her determination to become a percussionist, shaping her career path.
Enjoy two of their recent tracks for the first time available on vinyl!
